Language Cafè LUISS

Language Cafés have being set up all over Europe by taking language learning in an exciting direction; no professors, no grammar lessons no homework ! Having a cup of hot tea, munching biscuits, meeting new people and learn English, French, Italian or Spanish. All together. This is the language exchange, a phenomenon that has invaded the bars and pubs of most of the major cities around the world, involving tourists, exhange people and Italians who want to learn a new language. It is cycling together, just like in a tandem, so that everyone teaches each other their mother tongue. Among the advantages we can definitely ascribe to this method I think is important to emphasize the following:

1. It’s fun and you can make new friends from different cultures

2. You learn slang and colloquial expressions you don’t usually learn in a language class

3. It’s free

4. There is no homework or boring grammar books to study

5. You practice both listening and speaking at the same time. If you also want to practice writing and reading, you can do so by exchanging emails with your language exchange partner

6. It’s a very fast and effective language learning method

How do I get involved to the activities in the Language Cafe at Luiss? It spreads by word of mouth, but also on social networks, like on the Facebook Official page “Luiss Laguage Cafe” where all the students exchange information on various activities. Since October there have been courses and workshops that the Language Cafe offers and the particularity comes from the fact that all of them are made by students for the students. Do you want to know how to order in Italian a Pizza or maybe how to ask for a pint of Beer (or more than one) during the Oktoberfest in Germany? Enjoy the Italian lunch break course of the team “Speakando” and the German Language and Culture courses! And it is not over yet there are many activities that are going on during the week such as “ The Evolution of the Concept of Nobility : A historical trip through the myth of the italian gentleman” and “Singing and music creation” a workshop that is made entirely by an Argentinian Erasmus that wants to illustrate the feel and language of Music (as well as some Spanish). There is enough room at the Language Café for anybody who wants to improve their knowledge of a culture or language and want to spend their time in a different way. Integration, contamination of languages and different opinions leds to the creation of a laboratory for starting new initiatives, always in the direction of exchange between students especially now that we are living in such a globalized world where all the cultures are intertwined.
